Trauma-Informed Care Specialist and Yoga Teacher
Dr Laura Chapman is a general practitioner, medical innovator, international speaker, patient advocate, and educator in trauma-informed care. With specialist expertise in mental health, women’s health, and persistent pain, Laura takes a holistic approach that blends medical science with evidence-based mind–body practices.
In 2020, Laura completed yoga teacher training, adding another dimension to her care. She developed Yoga-CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), an integrative approach that combines psychological therapy with yoga principles to help people feel safer, calmer, and more resilient.
Laura understands that talking therapy alone can sometimes fall short in reducing the full impact of trauma. By incorporating movement practices such as yoga and somatic movement, she helps clients process and integrate their experiences more effectively—particularly when combined with EMDR therapy.
The Benefits of Yoga and Somatic Movement
Yoga is an ancient practice using postures, breathwork (pranayama), and meditation to restore balance in mind and body. Somatic movement, by contrast, is free-form and intuitive, focusing on the felt sense of movement rather than rigid poses.
Together, yoga and somatic movement provide a powerful toolkit for healing. Techniques such as guided relaxation can reduce tension, forward folds calm the nervous system, backbends and inversions boost energy, while somatic practices release stress. Laura uses these approaches to support patients in reconnecting with their bodies, building emotional resilience, and finding a greater sense of balance and wellbeing.
